The Roots of Hula on Oʻahu
Hula has many roots, with various traditions offering different origins of the art – reflecting the beauty of the Hawaiian respect for multiple perspectives in a way that does not need to be mutually exclusive.
Where Can I See Hula on Oʻahu?
You can see hula across Oʻahu at live performances at hotels and resorts, and festivals and competitions like the King Kamehameha Hula Competition (June), the Prince Lot Hula Festival (July) and the Queen Liliʻuokalani Keiki Hula Festival (July).
A lūʻau is another fun and festive place to watch hula and learn about Hawaiian culture. There are many excellent lūʻau to choose from on Oʻahu, including the Aliʻi Lūʻau at the Polynesian Cultural Center on the North Shore, the Paradise Cove Lūʻau at Kō Olina in Leeward Oʻahu and the Royal Hawaiian Lūʻau (Ahaʻaina) at The Royal Hawaiian Hotel. You might also consider Germaine's Lūʻau at Kalaeloa, Ka Moana Lūʻau in Sea Life Park, Lēʻahi Head Farm to Table Lūʻau in the Waikīkī Aquarium, Waikīkī Starlight Hawaiian Lūʻau, and Ka Wa‘a Lūʻau at Disney’s Aulani Resort.
While serious study of hula is undertaken in a hālau hula under the tutelage of a kumu hula, more casual lessons are offered at select Oʻahu hotels and resorts, as well as places like the Royal Hawaiian Center.
